Former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is set to rejoin the club as director of football on a three-year contract.
The 66-year-old is thought to have been brought in as owner Mike Ashley seeks to breathe new life into the club after a disappointing season in which they finished just two places above the relegation zone.
Kinnear told Sky Sports News: It s been an ongoing situation with (club owner) Mike Ashley for three weeks and once we clarified what my role would be in charge of transfers and to help out (manager) Alan Pardew I thought it s a very interesting role.
I don t believe I could be at a better role at a better club.
I believe I m a very good judge of players, a good tactician, I ve worked with the best I intend to make Newcastle far better than they ar…
Scotland earned a morale-boosting 1-0 win over the Czech Republic as Gordon Strachan s men began their preparations for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign with a victory.
Ikechi Anya put Scotland into the lead after nine minutes in Prague on Thursday, racing on to a throughball from Ross McCormack before slotting a neat finish through the legs of debutant goalkeeper Tomas Koubek.
Allan McGregor made a string of saves to keep his side ahead and Borek Dockal saw his free-kick smash back off the crossbar shortly before Anya s opener.
Victory for Scotland who saw their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012 dashed thanks to a controversial late penalty in a 2-2 draw at Hampden Park in September 2011 the last time the sides faced each other sets them up nicely for a home friendly aga…
Roberto Martinez knew what was coming.
He stressed the importance of patience from his World Cup contenders. The Belgium boss wanted a mature performance against a Panama side he refused to underestimate.
Panama – the debutants with nothing to lose and all to gain on a historic day after coach Hernan Dario Gomez playfully promised to drink two bottles of vodka if the newcomers somehow managed to make it out of Group G.
And it unfolded just as Martinez predicted, despite Romelu Lukaku s quickfire brace and a mesmerising volley from Dries Mertens giving the appearance of a comfortable 3-0 win in Sochi on Monday.
It was frustrating and physical, but the star-studded Red Devils showed the calmness and maturity needed to move past the quarter-finals of a maj…
Barcelona star Luis Suarez has underlined the importance of his time at Liverpool and believes he reached another level at Anfield.
The Uruguay international enjoyed a successful spell on Merseyside between 2011 and 2014, before making the move to Camp Nou.
He has since developed into a key figure at Barcelona, but doubts he would be playing at the same standard without his time in the Premier League.
Liverpool turned me [into] a player of a different level, Suarez told ESPN. A player like [former Liverpool captain Steven] Gerrard, he was so motivating the way he played. I learned so much from him.
You went in there and you were transformed. They never gave up. The fans [were] so motivating. The stadium was always full. It made me grow as a player, I …

There always seems to be one every season, or so it appears. Last season in the Bundesliga, it was RB Leipzig, whilst Atalanta shocked Serie A to finish in an impressive fourth last term. Not too long ago, it was Sassuolo, who established themselves as giant killers after making their top flight debut only in 2013. And who can forget Leicester City s unprecedented Premier League triumph in 2016?
Meanwhile, in Ligue 1, Nice finished in a very solid third recently, only behind Monaco and PSG. This time around, however, Les Aiglons aren t exactly soaring at the moment, and based on points alone, are actually closer to the relegation spots than a European berth although due to how congested things are in the table, that could change quite quickly. Meanwhile, as Monaco and PSG predi…

Portugal winger Nani has re-joined Sporting CP on a permanent basis more than a decade after originally departing for Manchester United.
Valencia reportedly allowed the 31-year-old to leave on a free in order to reunite with the club that gave him his professional debut in 2005.
He previously returned for a loan spell during the 2014-15 season, netting 11 goals in 36 competitive appearances.
The Euro 2016 winner has failed to settle since leaving United with no more than one season spent at any of Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio, where he played on loan last term.
Sporting have likewise struggled for stability in recent times, seeing a host of first-team players head for the exit following a training ground attack from fans at the end of last season.
