Kinnear set to become Newcastle´s director of football

Former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is set to rejoin the club as director of football on a three-year contract.

The 66-year-old is thought to have been brought in as owner Mike Ashley seeks to breathe new life into the club after a disappointing season in which they finished just two places above the relegation zone.

Kinnear told Sky Sports News: It s been an ongoing situation with (club owner) Mike Ashley for three weeks and once we clarified what my role would be in charge of transfers and to help out (manager) Alan Pardew I thought it s a very interesting role.
I don t believe I could be at a better role at a better club.

I believe I m a very good judge of players, a good tactician, I ve worked with the best I intend to make Newcastle far better than they are now. The former Wimbledon boss managed Newcastle from September 2008 following Kevin Keegan s resignation and remained in place until April 2009 when he was was forced to leave for health reasons. His record at St James Park was mixed, though, as he won just five of his 26 games at the helm. However, Ashley has clearly not been put off by that spell.
